I really have to stop surfing when the meds wear off. Today I went on over to Dr. Phil's website to see what he had to say re Asperger's. The information wasn't actually terrible, though the perspective was a little...interesting. The Expert/Messiah he had on at the end was going to do some SPECT scans or something to get brain images and analyze blood flow to different parts of the brain, so I guess they're going to try biofeedback. I've read a little re biofeedback in relation to ADHD, not autism. I have to wonder why he'd recommend that approach as opposed to, oh, behavioral approaches, about which there is a huge body fo research. Also, the show pretty much made Asperger's look like a conduct disorder, and the list of symptoms to watch for sounded a whole lot more like PDD or infantile autism than Asperger's (regression in language development: Asperger's is supposed to be distinguished by grossly normal language development, and I've NEVER come across regression as part of the Asperger's package).

So anyway, I figured Dr. Phil needed the benefit of my knowledge (why the fuck not have Volkmar on if you're going to have an Expert on? Or Tony Attwood?). And I drafted this looooong email on their craptastic contact page, which boots you off if you fill a line in wrong, and then you have to start at the beginning. So I had all this good stuff re DSM-IV, need for accurate information, why not mention behavioral techniques, etc., and then the power went out in the house, and my email of course was nuked. Alas.

Maybe I should write a series of haikus:

Dearest Dr. Phil,
Check the DSM-IV-R.
Your info is wrong.

Asperger's does not
Equal psychotic rages.
Kindly acknowledge.
