Incidentally, WRT the autism article in the Times that's created a bit of a stir--the one re autism as difference? I'm on a whole bunch of mailing lists related to ye spectrum: seems the reporter called James Mulick and no less than Ivar Lovaas* for the article. Neither of them made it in. Guess it didn't fit w/the angle the reporter was pursuing, though I'd certainly be curious to hear what they had to say....
*Lovaas=the guy who famously (well, famous if you're me) applied the insights of behavior modification and behavior analysis to the treatment of autistic children. Very famous controlled study (again, famous if you're me) of 19 children. Nine "recovered" (note: were not cured) or were found to be indistinguishable after two years of intensive applied behavior analysis (we're talking 40 hours per week). People who are not well-informed sometimes refer to ABA as "Lovaas." Here endeth the lesson.
