Could I just mention how much I hate the "autistic" character on Grey's Anatomy? First of all, she's comic relief. Second, I hate the little smile she has pasted on her face--it makes her look silly, and I've never met an autistic person who did that. Third of all, say Temple Grandin's name when you mention the hugging machine and the cattle chutes. Fourth of all, stop having Bailey and Yang look so weirded out by what she tells them: they should have covered autism when they did their fifteen minutes of peds rotation in medical school, and they're supposed to be extremely smart people. Fifth: no one with Dixon's level of social impairment would have gotten through medical school, let alone a cardiac residency, when Dixon was young. Asperger's wasn't even a diagnosis until 1994. Sixth: I don't know, it just pisses me off. Though the autistic teen on All My Children didn't bother me nearly as much, God knows why.
Okay, done venting. The only part that does ring true is that she can be incredibly perceptive and observant b/c she has to do what Karl Wittig described as the "Columbo routine": putting things together to see if they're truthful or not, intellectually doing what most of us are doing at a less conscious level.
The show jumped the shark awhile ago, but it's a bad habit. And it still has Patrick Dempsey on it.
