Here's an interesting thing: a new lab program opened through NYU's Asperger Institute.
One of the things that's surprised me (hah! To put it mildly) is how little is out there in terms of quality programming for any subset of people on the spectrum. Even in an area as rich as New York. Even in an area as rich as Long Island. There's a freeze on starting new schools (though I heard some scuttlebutt to the effect that someone with a family connection was able to get a program started through AHRC), unless you want to start your own, privately--which some people have done. But assuming you have a kid with severe impairments, you'd have to be fairly close to bionic to accomplish this. People do it, but it's more a testament to the superhuman determination of loving parents than a practical solution if you're tired of fighting with the school district and just want to go Somewhere Else.
