So today we had an interesting discussion at work (I work for an autism-related nonprofit at the moment, yay me) about a poster that Sigourney Weaver had done for GRASP (Sigourney Weaver had done a movie called Snow Cake in which she played an autistic woman). Anywhoo, the poster was of Sigourney, looking fetching, I might add, surrounded by some people w/Asperger's, who are smiling and generally looking like life is okay, and the large text says something like, "Not everyone with autism wants to be cured."
It's a great Rorschach test, in a way: I liked it, with reservations, which is how I feel about most things except for Cadbury bars, Yeats, and my near and dear. Another person loved it. Another parent really didn't like it: thought it was way too positive about the pain that goes along with autism. And she had a lot of really good reasons for why she felt the way she did--somewhere in there she said, "It depends on whether you're a lumper or a splitter when it comes to the disability," which I thought was a great way of putting it. And again, as with most things in life, I straddle the fence....
I've never actually seen Alien, but I always thought this picture rocked:
