So okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed that The Incredibles is proto-fascist. Even the animation is somewhat Futuristic, though I suppose most comic book-inspired art is. But I find it somewhat scary that people are accepting it as affirming for gifted kids.
To point out the obvious: the true superpowers are physical--speed, elasticity, strength--and heritable (Mr. Incredible and the missus have superchildren with their own special powers). Incrediboy doesn't count because his gifts are cognitive--he only invents. Mr. Incredible (aka Bob), it need hardly be said, is square of jaw and large of physique. Sort of stereotypically...Aryan. The filmmakers must have been aware of this when they gave him an African-American sidekick.
We had all the debates about the impossibility of a true meritocracy years ago, didn't we? How are we determining merit? Who is measuring it?
Ayn Rand must be getting a brief shot of air conditioning Down Below.
