So I was reading this post on education, and it saddens me because this is where I started from as a teacher (though I was impatient with her denunciation of Shakespeare--yeah, fine, we all know about the canon wars, kay? You just poked a mighty big thumb in the establishment's eye, rejecting Shakespeare). Active learning. Empower the student. And I still believe in that for most students: I've read my Freire. And I'm as relativistic as the next person, except when it comes to my kid: there are disability activists who would consider behavior modification brainwashing, fascistic. Is it on some level? I just don't have patience for that argument, as I don't have patience for Lacanian theory or relativism anymore: all very well, but what about my child's brain? What empirically is going to fix my child's brain?
